Recently, I stumbled upon a Persian poet by the name of Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muhammad Hāfez-e Shīrāzī, but his pen name is Hafez. And wow. I don’t know if you know this about me but quotes and good poetry make me feel so happy. I look to quotes to analyze, learn, and connect. And Hafez’s work is so good… Like I did for Vonnegut, here are some of my favorite quotes by Hafez:
“Stay close to anything that makes you glad you’re alive.” – I love this one. Why stick by people, things, habits, etc. that make you feel bad about yourself or others? I’ve been having a hard with this, with people especially. YOU’RE HERE TO LOVE LIFE, and if it isn’t that way you’re doing something wrong
“An awake heart is like a sky that pours light” – I think of this as love. If you heart is awake, you’re love should pour out onto everyone and everything. Just like light during the day, you cannot overcome it. Make your love contagious, make it known.
“Run my dear, from anything that may not strengthen your precious budding wings.” – No matter how old you are, we’re all still learning and developing. If something is in the way of this growth, you do not need it. We’re all here to grow in ourselves, make it that way.
“What we speak becomes the house we live in”- The words we speak and the thoughts we think influence us and everyone around us. By saying your words become the house, it means that they surround you, you sometimes can’t get out. Would you rather live in a house made of rudeness, sadness, and anger? Or a house of kindness, compassion, and hope?
There are so many more quotes I love and I could truly go on forever, so I’ll stop myself here.
Look Hafez up, I hope he touches you as much as he touches me.
